The principle of structural coloration
Structural color is a color produced by physical effects such as reflection, diffraction, and interference of light due to the structure of the object itself. Structural color is a color that can be produced without using dyes or pigments. The main principles of structural coloration are as follows.
Thin film interference
Single-layer film interference and multi-layer film interference are the main forms of structural color produced by thin-film interference. The reason for these phenomena is that the reflected light with a certain optical path difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the film interferes on the upper surface. Blue morpho butterflies, green swallowtail butterflies, and Japanese gem beetles are among the more typical representatives.
Photonic crystal
Photonic crystal is a general term for a type of microstructure with photonic bandgap characteristics. The structural color of photonic crystals is the result of the selective effect of this regular microstructure on visible light, and is an important part of the structural color in nature. Opal color development is a typical representative in the non-biological field.
Other
Structural color phenomena can also occur due to light scattering, dispersion, grating diffraction and other reasons. Among natural phenomena, blue sky is a prominent representative of structural colors produced by light scattering. When sunlight enters the atmosphere, the shorter wavelength blue, cyan, purple and other colors of light are scattered by the fine dust in the air. The rainbow phenomenon is caused by the dispersion of light under the action of fine droplets.
Structure colors future development
Structural colors have many potential functions. One could imagine creating a range of colors without using any dyes, using sensors, light protectors, or even just using one method.
Compared with dyes or pigments, its biggest feature is that it avoids environmental pollution caused by production and application in the printing and dyeing industry, completely solves the problem of sewage discharge during the coloring process, and can also save a lot of water and electricity consumption. It is a rising trend in the current textile energy-saving and emission reduction work. The rising “star of tomorrow”.
