Expensive clothes made of natural fibers or protein fibers such as wool and silk will be difficult to repair once they are torn. Recently, American scientists have developed a fabric that can repair itself!

Melik C Demirel, professor of engineering science and mechanics at Pennsylvania State University, said that once expensive clothes made of natural fibers or protein fibers such as wool and silk are torn, It will be difficult to repair, and this new self-healing fabric solves this problem very well. When the fabric cracks, it can heal automatically by just adding water.

Experiments have shown that the coated material can self-sew together after being cut into segments. The researchers sprayed water on segments of the coating material and then applied pressure to the segments, which quickly formed a whole that was elastic and strong. Demirel said: “We coat the entire garment to form this advanced material. For the first time we spin it and then manufacture it according to people’s needs.”

In addition, the special coating on the fabric’s surface neutralizes toxic chemicals thanks to the addition of enzymes. In an experimental demonstration, the researchers added urease to the coating, an enzyme that detoxifies urea by breaking it down into ammonia and carbon dioxide. In addition to urease, other enzymes can be added to fabric coatings to match target chemicals for customized detoxification.
The fabric is useful for preventing the skin from absorbing toxic substances, such as the deadly organophosphates that people are likely to be exposed to when using herbicides and pesticides. Demirel emphasized that the coating material is very thin, with a thickness of less than 1 micron, so you will not feel any difference when wearing clothes. Although the coating is very thin, it can enhance the overall strength of the material. This is the first time that a self-healing material has been manufactured. synthetic fabrics.
