The third ultra-lightweight composite bridge/wing student competition was won by Tsinghua students

From October 26th to 28th, the third ultra-light laminated bridge/wing student competition was held at the Tianjin Binhai Convention and Exhibition Center. After fierce competition, the second team of Tsinghua University performed well in the plant fiber bridge group competition and won the first place in the natural plant fiber bridge group with a load-to-weight ratio of 13.48 (self-weight 645.6g, ultimate load 8702.8N); participated in the carbon fiber bridge group A team from Tsinghua University won the third prize for best video presentation.

This competition is co-sponsored by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, SAMPE (The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering) Beijing Branch, SAMPE Shanghai Branch, and the China Aeronautical Society. It is sponsored and supported by Boeing Company of the United States. The competition content is divided into Three groups were conducted: wings, carbon fiber bridges, and natural fiber bridges. The participating students use the core materials, fabrics and other materials in the drawings and tool kits provided by the competition organizing committee to design and manufacture a wing or bridge that fits the materials. They conduct a mid-span loading test under simply supported conditions on site to calculate the maximum load and The ratio of mid-span deflection, the one with the larger ratio wins. In addition, awards for the best craftsmanship, best poster and best video presentation were also selected at the competition site.

This competition brings together more than ten colleges and universities from Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Harbin Engineering University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Donghua University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing University of Technology, etc. The school’s 51 teams, with nearly 200 students participating in the competition, cover lamination materials, mechanics, aerospace and other related professional fields. The two teams sent by Tsinghua University are both graduate students from the Composite Materials Engineering Structure Research Group of the Department of Civil Engineering. ‘

Advanced laminate materials are important structural materials that support the cutting-edge science and technology fields of aviation, aerospace and national defense. They are strategic materials for a country and occupy an important position in the national economy and national defense construction. Because advanced laminating materials have the characteristics of light weight, high specific strength, specific modulus, good ductility, corrosion resistance, heat insulation, sound insulation, shock absorption, high (low) temperature resistance, etc., they can be used to organize the main bearing. The stiffness and strength properties of force structures and secondary load-bearing structures are equivalent to or exceed those of aluminum alloys. At the same time, due to its strong designability, various molding processes, and wide application, it is an important direction for future engineering structure application and research.

The Ultra-Light Laminated Materials Wing Competition has been held for 6 times during the SAMPE American Annual Conference, while the Ultra-Light Laminated Materials Bridge Competition has been held for 14 times. Students participating in the competition design and manufacture a wing and bridge that fit the material by using the core materials, fabrics and other materials in the drawings and tool kits provided by the organizing committee, and conduct on-site testing to obtain a wing and bridge with a high load-to-weight ratio. , that is, the one with the larger load/weight ratio wins.

In China, the Ultra-Light Laminated Material Bridge/Wing Manufacturing Student Competition has been held twice in Tianjin and Shanghai respectively. The competition is mainly open to students from Chinese universities and research institutes. The competition aims to popularize the knowledge of advanced laminate material structure design and improve students’ ability to analyze and solve problems, especially hands-on production. On the one hand, the event set up an international stage for students majoring in lamination materials to display their talents during the SAMPE China Annual Conference. At the same time, it encouraged students to open up their minds, fully innovate, and turn their minds into lightweight and strong “perfect wings and bridges”. “Designed and produced to present to the industry.
